For decades, we’ve believed that a child’s mind emerges from the brain.
But new developmental neuroscience shows something much more unsettling:
The mind emerges from the body — and it collapses when the body is out of tune. This matters because we’ve built an entire culture on the opposite assumption. Today, we tell children they are anxious, autistic, ADHD, or “neurodivergent.”
We treat these patterns as identities — fixed, genetic, intrinsic. But what if they’re not? What if many of the traits we now label as neurodivergence are actually the predictable developmental outcomes of a world the young body cannot metabolise — a world that destabilises the physiology required for reflective thought?
